Passing the Baton: Helping Others Become Disciple‑Makers Too

The ultimate goal of discipleship isn’t just spiritual growth, it’s multiplication.

You’re not only helping someone follow Jesus; you’re helping them help others follow Jesus too.

Multiplication isn’t an extra. It’s the mission.

So how do we intentionally help people become disciple‑makers themselves?

First, make the purpose clear from the beginning. From your first conversations, frame discipleship as something meant to be passed on. Not pressure, invitation. You’re not recruiting them into a task; you’re inviting them into a legacy.

Second, model what you want them to reproduce. If you want them to listen well, listen well. If you want them to ask good questions, ask good questions. If you want them to live authentically, show them what vulnerability looks like. People imitate what they experience.

Third, equip them through simple tools. Provide basic frameworks they can easily use with others. A simple way to read Scripture. A way to pray with people. A way to share their story. A way to listen for God’s leading. Don’t overload them, give them something transferable.

Fourth, release them early. Don’t wait until they feel fully ready. No one ever feels fully ready. Encourage them to begin discipling long before they think they can. Their imperfections won’t stop God from working. He’s been using imperfect people from the beginning.

Finally, continue walking with them even as they begin discipling others. Multiplication doesn’t mean abandonment. It means support. Celebrate their steps. Help them process challenges. Encourage them when they feel discouraged. Stand with them as they begin to lead.

Multiplication isn’t complicated.

It’s relational.

It’s intentional.

And it’s deeply rewarding.

When you see someone you discipled begin to disciple others, you realise you’re part of something far bigger than your own life.

That’s the heart of mission, not just being a disciple, but making disciples who go on to make more.
